You’re Reading Comics

Okay, slightly rant-y post to follow: I’ve seen quite a few #bookstagramers post about various Image Comics (like Paper Girls, Saga, Monstress) which are FABULOUS! However, these are not “graphic novels”. Just like this WW comic, these series were, well, “serialized” – much like TV shows they are distributed on a schedule (usually once or twice a month) For convenience and sales the comic book issues are collected in a volume. Thus they look like a “book”. Whereas graphic novels are just that. Novels that are produced in a graphic format. All graphic novels are comics. Not all comics are graphic novels.

“Okay, Renée why are you getting heated about terminology & how things are published?” you may ask. BECAUSE YOU’RE READING A COMIC BOOK AND THATS PRETTY EFFING COOL. Not to mention there’s a whole world of comic books to discover!!! And there are these wonderful places called comic book stores that sell COMIC BOOKS. If you like series like Paper Girls, Saga, Snot Girl, Rat Queens, etc. you might also like series like Young Avengers, Squirrel Girl, Wonder Woman, or Ms. Marvel and so on! This has been a friendly (if questionable and arguable)
