Swing Time: Digging Into Hard Topics
This is my third book by a woman of color this year, thus far I’ve been making good progress on my reading goals! I saw other reviews that there were very few “good” things in the book. That the prose are nice but that the book “rambled” about too many topics: race, gender, relationships, hierarchies.
For shame! To cover too many topics! To not have a happily ever after!
I laugh at this. Not out loud. More of an inward chuckle. I don’t think they get it. And that’s fine. But not every book is for every person. With that mini rant/soliloquy out of the way…
I really enjoyed this book. That’s not to say everything was roses & I love the characters, actually rather the opposite. Damn there are some hard truths in there about women’s and girl’s relationships, power & hierarchies, living your life based on other people, and race and diaspora. I have not read any other works by Zadie Smith, so I can’t speak to how it stacks up to her previous work, but I think this is thought-provoking & would definitely recommend giving it a try.
