RAFE: A Buff Male Nanny | Book Review
RAFE: A Buff Male Nanny by Rebekah Weatherspoon
Rebekah Weatherspoon Presents – September 26, 2018
I heard about Rebekah Weatherspoon on the “When in Romance” podcast, from Book Riot, and “Smart Podcast, Trashy Books“, from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. I recall the hosts on both podcast highly recommending Rafe, in particular!
I got my copy as part of “The Feel Better Bundle” benefiting one part of the writing duo that makes up Kit Rocha. The bundle contained around 40 books and it all went to helping Donna Herren! “TL;DR: The Donna half of Kit Rocha needs immediate surgery. This is a huge bundle of books. Pay whatever you’re willing to, all proceeds go to kicking her left boob’s ass.” Although I still need to read Kit Rocha, I noted that there were several authors contributing to the bundle so it seemed like a win-win! Plenty more books to read from that bundle!
About the Book
All Dr. Sloan Copeland needed was someone to watch her kids. What she found was the man of her dreams…
After a nasty divorce and a thousand mile move, Dr. Sloan Copeland and her twin daughters are finally getting the hang of their new life in Los Angeles. When their live-in nanny bails with no warning, Sloan is left scrambling to find a competent caretaker to wrangle her smart, sensitive girls. Nothing less will do.
Enter Rafe Whitcomb. He’s all of those things, not to mention good-natured and one heck of a whiz in the kitchen. He’s also tall, and handsome, and bearded, and ripped, and tatted, wrist to neck.
It doesn’t take long for the Copelands to invite Rafe into their home. Just as quickly, both Sloan and Rafe find themselves succumbing to a heady mutual attraction, neither of them wants to deny. With every minute they spend under the same roof, this working mom can’t help but wonder if Rafe can handle all her needs…
This stand-alone romance is fluffy. So fluffy. It’s fluff. Low. Angst. Fluff. featuring a large tatted, motorcycle riding ginger man, who bakes a mean bacon quiche and knows exactly how to wrangle clever six year olds while making their mom feel loved, loved, loved.
My Thoughts
This is my first novel by Weatherspoon and it honestly helped soothe my soul during the early part of June. I read it one night before bed as a practiced some self care.
I totally agree with the idea of this being “fluffy” and sexy at the same time. I loved seeing her vivacious six-year-olds be adorable. I loved Rafe, the cinnamon roll hero and how he took care of Sloan. It features a so-called ‘beta’ hero that in actuality is the type of man I think should be the norm! He’s comfortable in his masculinity enough to take care of kids (well!), cook, clean, and respect the woman he’s lusting over and eventually falls in love with.
I loved seeing Dr. Sloan Copeland be confident and find love and pleasure. Sloan is a badass doctor and confident in her abilities as a surgeon. While she might not be the most confident when it comes to love, dating, and intimacy, it’s clear from the get go that she’s a confident woman. And her daughters are clever, vivacious, and actual characters in the book rather than just props for getting the characters together.
My main hang ups with the book are the pacing and the employer-employee dynamic. Initially, I was really hesitant about Rafe, the nanny, and Sloan, the employer, getting together. That kind of power dynamic is not something I like an any book or real life for that matter, typically its not something that I find attractive or compelling. However, this book kind of flips the script and the characters have open discussion about how their personal and professional lives will work, so it made it more comfortable to read.
Additionally, the whole book takes place over a few weeks and I found the jump between desire, to dating, to commitment to be too fast for me and broke my immersion in the story. But this is a short read! So it makes sense why everything happened quickly.
If you need some fluff – buy this book- Black joy and love matter
