Moving right along in my romance reading adventure… I devoured Amy Jarecki’s The Highland Renegade in one day! Despite reading a few other books, I picked this book up yesterday and read the whole thing in a matter of hours.

The Highland Renegade is the fifth book in Jarecki’s The Lords of the Highlands series. Much like my last post, when requesting this book I didn’t pay much attention to whether the book was part of a series, however, again I had no issues jumping into this Scottish historical romance.

Forbidden love is the focus of this novel. Janet Cameron and Robert Grant belong to clans that have a longstanding feud. However, their icy interactions quickly turns sensuous after Robert saves her from the clutches of a drunken and vile English soldier. As Robert guides Janet to safety and eventually to his own home to cooperate the two fall in love. Despite Robert’s gallantry they both know her father and clan would never agree to a truce or marriage. Overcoming a number of obstacles the two finally unite their clans with the Jacobite uprising stirring in the background.

This was an easy and light read. On the whole I enjoyed the story line. This is my first time reading a Scottish historical romance and it definitely reminded me of Outlander, which I assume any Scottish romance will remind me of. My main hangup with the story however was the easiness in which several plot points were solved. The book builds up how the two cannot be together because the feuding clans and in a flash old grievances were settled and their marriage was agreed to . Additionally, the ending of the conflict with the English soldier also seemed a bit too neat. I would have liked more complication in both of these areas.

If you’re looking for a solid romance with a Scottish flair, I think you’d enjoy this.

Happy Reading!
